Morticia and the Nikon Charger

So, a short one today because I’m running out the door to use what’s left of the day before the kids finish school for two weeks.

First, I’m sending up a cheer because I found my camera battery charger! Hooray for that! I’ve been racking my brain, trying to figure out where on earth I could have put it, and using my phone to take photos instead. Which is fine but unsatisfying. I like the clarity of my camera.

The other thing is that having decided to henna my hair, I realised that I wasn’t going to have time and used a chemist-bought hair dye instead. Bittersweet Chocolate it said! It isn’t. It’s black. Shiny, healthy looking black but so dark against my skin that I look decidedly Morticia-like. I put makeup on yesterday, then went out in the car and when I saw myself in the rear-view mirror, all I could think was; “Oh my god…..an older, plumper, more harried Snow White…what have I done?!” It may have been the pinkish lipstick…..

Best Fish Pie

This is Day 4 of my week long, self-imposed challenge to post each evening’s dinner here. It’s a thinly-veiled ruse to get myself back here and writing, after a few weeks off and it’s working. Hooray!

I’m excited about tonight’s dinner. It was REALLY good! On a scale of one to ten, Andy gave it a twelve….and it wasn’t just dinner tonight, oh no. In a departure from the norm, I made dessert as well and Zac could barely pretend to be interested in dinner, with the prospect of Apple Crumble to come.

First though, dinner. It was Fish Pie, from a Jamie Oliver recipe and truly, it was the best fish pie I’ve ever eaten! When I thought to make one, I was imagining wine and cream and cheese but his recipe is so much simpler and more healthy. It has grated carrot and spinach and other delish things. The fact that it was better than any other I’ve tried as well was such a bonus. Later, taking a plate to the kitchen, I saw Andy scooping the last mouthful from the dish “Just making it easier to wash up” he said, looking for any that had been missed. I don’t blame him at all, it was awesome!

And so to dessert.

Over at Conor Bofin’s Blog ‘One Man’s Meat’, I read a Rhubarb Crumble recipe and it looked so yummy, I decided to try an apple one for us tonight, after all our hard work. I modified the recipe, since I made them in small, individual ramekins, so needed less of everything and used apple instead of the rhubarb, obviously.  Even before they were cooked, the apples were aromatic and sweet and yumptious and afterwards….Oh afterwards, they were sublime.

I’m not even kidding. Best dessert in years! It was served with a dollop of cream on each one but I could easily have gone without it, I discovered.

Isn't it pretty?

Day 4, complete 🙂

So, Today Is Mother’s Day

“No it isn’t”

Yes. Yes it is. Tomorrow Andy and Sam will be far from home, playing more sport and they decided collectively that instead of missing out or panicking to rush home for the last hours of the day, that we’d have Mother’s Day a day early.

In fact, for me, Mother’s Day began even earlier than that.

Friday afternoon there were no computers, video games or ipads in evidence. We sat together while they practised guitar, we talked, hugged, created games to play over dinner and were generally present with each other. At dinner, we ate and played a game which probably already has a name but which I’m going to call Persuasion, since it was designed  after doing persuasive text stuff with Zac.

We wrote statements on pieces of paper, folded them, put them in a bowl and then while we ate, chose them one at a time, randomly. Zac and I were one team, Sam and Andy the other and the idea was for one side to be ‘for’ and the other ‘against’ the statement, whatever it might be.

They included ‘The Moon Actually Is Made Of Cheese’, ‘Dinosaurs Aren’t Real’, ‘The World Is Actually Flat’, and ‘Football Was Invented By Hedgehogs’.

It was all fun and games until Zac accidentally put tabasco sauce in his eye and the debate came to an abrupt end….

He was fine after a thorough eye rinse and hand wash and the rest of the evening was gentle and nice.

Then this morning, I was woken by both my boys and led, eyes closed, to the table. When I opened my eyes, it was to see the three of them smiling and a table laden with beautiful fruit, steaming mugs of coffee, fresh juice and various pastries. I knew Andy must have got up early and gone shopping.

The little bowls in front of each place were the beautiful blue and orange ones I’d seen and loved a few days ago.

The date's wrong, obviously...

The date’s wrong, obviously…

Zac brought out the presents he’d bought at the mother’s day stall at school, a pretty bookmark and some bath balls and after breakfast, they ran me a bath and left me to relax and sing until I felt like getting out.

In a few minutes, we’ll take a drive to a restaurant by the water and have lunch.

Today I am the luckiest woman on earth. Thank you family. I love you.

Weekend Swimming and Gratitude

Bright sunshine, pale blue water, people calling, laughing, splashing. Lanes to one side, swimmers, purposeful and goggled, me among them, slicing through the water, muscles remembering how to do it, moving forward with every arm movement, part of me switching off, getting out of my own way. Just swim, just move.

1km yesterday, goggles leaking, son giving me his because he’s just that sort of awesome, finishing triumphant. Waking this morning feeling more toned than yesterday and ready to do it again.

Getting to the pool again with a sense of happy gratitude that I get to be here with my kids, in the sun, blue sky, water soft and just the perfect temperature. More kids splashing, squealing with glee, being in life, alive, fearless, full of joy.

Finishing my 20 laps and deciding that I can do more, doing 4 more and then stopping, moving towards my boys, getting out, dripping, smiling, talking, driving home in the warmth of the car, wrapped in towels, drinking water.

Getting home to a house made lovely because Andy’s just that kind of awesome. Time to make us all dinner.
