I was a bit worried about rest days, that maybe it’d be harder, or that I’d feel less motivated, that my foray into the land of cake and no exercise might have sapped my will.                                                                                                 (I can get more dramatic than that if you give me a minute..)

I think making the decision last night, to be excited to move again today was a good one. This morning I had to take the car in for a service. I dropped it off, made sure they had my phone number and started to walk. I love how versatile walking is, as an exercise. It requires no special equipment, apart from my shoes and it doesn’t need a track, or a gym, or anything really. It’s just one foot in front of the other, again and again and again, and the distance just rolls out behind me.

Later, I watched a Michelle Bridges 12WBT video, the latest in the course, where she talks about motivation being far less important than consistency. That sometimes ‘Just fricking do it’ (her words, I’m not as polite) is the key. I’ve found myself really responding to this stuff. I like the idea of having all the emotion and worry taken out of exercise and diet. Just keep moving works well for me.

By the time they called me to say that the car was ready, I was almost back at the garage, with 6km behind me and a definite sense of achievement.

Just keep moving, just keep moving... :-)

Just keep moving, just keep moving… 🙂

I know that walking isn’t the only exercise there is, and that eventually, as I lose weight and feel fitter, I’ll want to try other things again too but for now, it’s pretty much perfect. I finish with a sore, weary body and a renewed enthusiasm to eat healthily and have regular sleep.

Still, I’m looking forward to the time that all the school swimming carnivals are done, so I can use the pool again….

The Weigh-In

I’m imagining that title said in the rich, portentious tones of Sean Connery and the crowd hushing (that would be me, since Andy’s left for work and the kids are still asleep) as I step onto the scales….

1.2kg lighter

Hooray! I’m on the right track, though of course, being a long time dieter, it would have been nice to see some big, dramatic number every week. But in Michelle Bridges 12 week body transformation, it isn’t called a weigh-in, it’s called a ‘weekly checkpoint’ and I like that much better. Because this isn’t just about the weight, although that’s certainly the driving force. This is more than that. There are other changes to be noticed, like the fact that when I look in the mirror, the woman looking back at me looks healthier, and activated, alert and eager for life. That alone is worth much.

Add to that the fact that my children, all of us, are reaping the benefits of having a truly healthful diet, rich in fruits and veg, low in sugars and that we all have better energy levels as a result.

Then there are the walks, with my boys, my friends, my sister, those opportunities to talk with the people I love to be with, while we move.

Swimming too, which I’ve always loved, really loved, ever since my Mum taught me how to swim when I was little, in our local pool. She held a feather and I’d swim towards it. She’d stand in the water, healthy and tanned, moving slowly backwards as I swam, giving me encouragement, cheering when I made it.

One thing I need to be more careful of this coming week is my calorie intake. In my care to not overdo it, it seems I’m not actually eating enough! I haven’t felt hungry and I’m certainly not starving myself but my hunger prompts have been knocked about a bit in the last….lots of years and I’m having to re-learn what they feel like. Until then, I’ll have to make sure I get to the required calories. Now there’s a turnabout!

Weekend Swimming and Gratitude

Bright sunshine, pale blue water, people calling, laughing, splashing. Lanes to one side, swimmers, purposeful and goggled, me among them, slicing through the water, muscles remembering how to do it, moving forward with every arm movement, part of me switching off, getting out of my own way. Just swim, just move.

1km yesterday, goggles leaking, son giving me his because he’s just that sort of awesome, finishing triumphant. Waking this morning feeling more toned than yesterday and ready to do it again.

Getting to the pool again with a sense of happy gratitude that I get to be here with my kids, in the sun, blue sky, water soft and just the perfect temperature. More kids splashing, squealing with glee, being in life, alive, fearless, full of joy.

Finishing my 20 laps and deciding that I can do more, doing 4 more and then stopping, moving towards my boys, getting out, dripping, smiling, talking, driving home in the warmth of the car, wrapped in towels, drinking water.

Getting home to a house made lovely because Andy’s just that kind of awesome. Time to make us all dinner.
